The practice of compassion and lovingkindness, known as metta, can be practiced informally. It is quite simple. As you encounter people throughout the day – be they friends or total strangers – silently send them well-wishes. It doesn’t need to be long or formal, just be sure to include the sight of the person, the feeling in your body, and a phrase or two.

As you pass people on the sidewalk, at work, or in the grocery store, mentally send them well-wishes. You may catch yourself smiling involuntarily!
