People who write regularly get the most out of their journaling experience, but you need to do what works best for you. No matter what type of journal you use, set a daily time or page goal just as you do with your meditation practice.

Many people benefit from having a brief warm-up session before diving into grief. Here are a few techniques you can use:

12 Minute Warm-Up

Set a timer for one minute and write your stream of consciousness without editing, reading what you wrote, or stopping the pen from moving. Do this three times in a row. Then up the time to three minutes. Then 6. Now you are ready to write.

Synopsis

Set a timer for five minutes and describe what happened on the latest episode of your favorite television show or in the book you are currently reading. Follow the same rules above: No editing, reading, or stopping.

Picturing Your Prompt

Set a timer for five minutes, then head over to National Geographic’s Photo Of The Day and describe what you see (without reading the caption if you can!). And, you guessed it, no editing, reading, or stopping.
