Collage is an easy way to express how you feel when words fall short.
In this exercise you will create a vision of how you would like the future to be, while at the same time honoring your loved one who has died. There are intentionally very few instructions for this exercise because there is no right or wrong way to do it.
Gather magazines, illustrations, and photographs with themes that will help you tell the story of your loss while at the same time illustrating your aspirations for the future. If you have photographs of loved ones, you may wish to copy or scan them so you don’t destroy the originals.
If you would like to use specific images you may be able to find them on the internet and print them out. You can use words as well as images.
Instructions
Sit on the floor or at a table where you will be able to spread out your magazines and art supplies.
Close your eyes and connect with your breath.
Imagine you could tell your story through images. This is the story of where you have come from and where you are going. This is your story, which honors the past and holds peaceful aspirations for the future while maintaining a mindful connection to where you are right now.
When you are ready to create your collage, simply cut out the images, arrange them on your cardstock or poster board, and use your glue stick to adhere them in place.
As you create your collage, check in with your breath from time to time and use the Six Doors of the Senses to maintain mindful awareness of the present moment.
